The Senator representing Delta South Senatorial District, Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, has called on the Itsekiri, Ijaw and Urhobo ethnic nationalities in Warri Federal Constituency to sheath their swords and embrace peaceful coexistence in the interest of sustainable development and unity in the area.
Senator Onowakpo made the appeal while reacting to recent efforts aimed at promoting peace and understanding among the various ethnic groups in Warri Federal Constituency.
Speaking through his aid, Hon Kingsley Tenumah, the lawmaker stressed that peace remains the bedrock of development, urging all parties to avoid actions and utterances capable of heating up the polity or causing unnecessary tension among the people.
He commended the Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, for his timely intervention in the matter through the convening of a peace and reconciliation meeting involving key stakeholders from the affected ethnic nationalities.
According to Senator Onowakpo, the Governor’s proactive approach has demonstrated strong leadership and a genuine commitment to maintaining peace, security and harmony across the state.
Senator Joel through his Senior Special Adviser Hon Kingsley Tenumah( AFERE) reminded them of efforts being made by government and interested stakeholders for companies/ investors to return to warri, adding that even a mere rumours of war is enough to jeopardize these efforts.
The Delta South Senator also expressed appreciation to the leaders of the Itsekiri, Ijaw and Urhobo ethnic groups for embracing dialogue and agreeing to sign a peace accord aimed at fostering mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence.
He noted that the decision of the ethnic leaders to commit themselves to peace through the accord was a significant step towards preserving the long-standing relationship among the various communities in Warri Federal Constituency.
Senator Onowakpo urged all stakeholders, community leaders, youth groups and residents to support the peace process and remain law-abiding, emphasizing that the collective interest of the people should take precedence over ethnic differences.
He expressed optimism that with sustained dialogue, cooperation and respect for one another, lasting peace and development would continue to thrive in Warri Federal Constituency and Delta State at large.
