NGO tasks government, military, institutions in peace building

A Non-Governmental Organization, Peace Builders in Oil Producing Communities of the Niger Delta (PBOPCND) has called on governments’ at all level, corporate individuals, international organizations and other relevant authorities for collaboration in building a sustainable and enduring peace in the region.

The National President of the group, General Fiobotei Wisdom, says the brainchild behind the establishment of the initiative was to sustain and bring peace to the Niger Delta region, adding, "without peace there will be no meaningful development to strive in the region".

He disclosed this during a meeting held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, the aims and objectives of the organization is to promote peace in the oil producing communities of the Niger Delta region and its environs, promoting a conducive atmosphere/enabling environment and support government peace road map initiative in the Niger Delta region.

According to him, the organization will henceforth organize peace building seminars, workshops and training with the participation of seasoned resource persons and professionals from reputable institutions within and outside the country, noting that the organization intend to sensitize youths, create awareness, trainings and empowerment of youths, women and physically challenged and less privileged persons in the rural communities in the region.

The organization will act as synergy between oil producing communities, government and multinational companies engaged in oil exploration in addressing issues that brings disharmony, advising youths to desist from vandalism of oil installations and government valuable properties in the region.

While adding that the organization will also promote academic excellence to the people through quality education, scholarship, bursary awards and care for the less privileged persons in the communities, acknowledging that the organization has received credit from federal government of Nigeria and its activities endorsed.

In their separate remarks, members of the National Working Committee of the group, Pastor Alagha E. Bibi-Welson said the organization will always orient youths in the region to have rethink and change the mindset of people and urge its members to always preach peace in their domain to ensure sustainable peace and development in the region.

According to him, the aims and objectives of the organization will solve many teething problems confronting the people in the region when adequately implemented.

Head of Security, Mr. Jonathan said the NGO will liaison and partner with the military and other security agencies in building peace and create cordial relationship with the military to sustain peace in the region.

Miss Moderlin Amos believed that Peace Builders will put modalities in addressing issues that governments failed to address in the region, the organization will continue to visit communities and local government areas to ascertain issues affecting communities and engaged the appropriate bodies and agencies for dialogue to resolve such issues.

Highpoints of the meeting was the official inauguration and presentation of appointment letters to the newly appointed State coordinators drawn from the nine States of the Niger Delta region.

The State Coordinators are: Mr. Briggs Igonikon Jnr, Rivers State, Mr. Omobhude Omofoma Vincent, Edo State, Mr. Tobiah Godwill Clement, Ondo, Mr. Gbaire Wilson, Delta State amongst others.

The newly appointed State Coordinators promised to deliver the mandate given them, thanked the NWC of the organization for finding them worthy as well as promised to work as a team and not to betray the trust bestowed on them.
