The Executive Secretary of Warri South-West Local Government Primary Health Care Authority, Dr. Wilfred Temisaren, has described malaria as a scourge that threatens the lives of the people and the economy of the nation.

Dr. Temisaren said this at the weekend during the flag-off and distribution of Long Lasting Insecticidal Net, LLIN to residents of Ogbe-Ijoh, headquarters of Warri South-West Local Government Area.

The Campaign, an initiative of the Delta State Ministry of Health and Delta State Primary Health Care Development Agency in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and Society for Family Health, is part of government's effort to fight the menace of malaria.

The Executive Secretary lamented that over 80% of deaths in Africa, can be attributed to malaria, adding that over 70% of sicknesses in Nigeria and in Warri South-West are caused by malaria.

He therefore urged people of Warri South-West Local Government Area to take the campaign seriously and adhere to sleeping with the LLIN to protect themselves against malaria.

In her address, the Chairperson of Warri South-West, Mrs. Modelene Efe Tuoyo, said malaria is the leading cause of death of many pregnant women and children in the local government.

She testified to the efficacy of the net by saying that her “family has not had cause to treat malaria”, urging everyone to sleep under the LLIN every night, so as to “reap the benefits of the net”.

Highpoints of the event included the flag-off and distribution of the LLIN to the residents and the decoration of the Chairperson as the Net Advocate for Warri South-West.
