The Nigerian Football Federation have announced the sacking of coach Stephen Keshi, despite him overseeing a 3-1 win over Sudan in 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying on Wednesday.
The tactician had come under heavy criticism in his homeland following a string of under-whelming results, starting with their failed 2014 World Cup campaign, while they went on to take just one point from their first three AFCON Group A qualifiers.
Keshi appeared to have lifted some of the pressure off his shoulders this week after getting Nigeria's AFCON campaign back on track against the Sudanese, but that has proved too little, too late for the tactician.
A brief statement from the NFF, posted on FIFA's official website, read: "In the interest of Nigeria football and the desire to ensure qualification for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations finals, the executive committee decided to relieve them (Keshi and his coaching staff) of their duties with immediate effect."
The NFF had initially kept Keshi on as Super Eagles head coach, despite his contract expiring after this year's Brazil showpiece, although they have now sent him on his way, with Shaibu Amodu believed to have been named caretaker coach.
