Kogi State unsure of participation as National Youth Games’ begins

Uncertainties currently rocks the participation of Team Kogi state as the 2016 National Youth Games commence on Saturday, September 24 in Ilorin.

The one-week event is scheduled to hold from September 22-30 in the Kwara State capital, featuring 13 sports with 36 states including FCT accredited to participate in the second edition of the Games.

The state team scheduled to depart for Ilorin on Thursday were held in Lokoja over failure to access funds meant for the sporting event.

With failed efforts to reach the state’s sports commissioner Arome Adoji, sports ministry’s sources say there are still no hope for release of funds yet.

The Kogi contingents comprises of 28 athletes and 10 officials with the Confluence team accredited to feature in seven sport events.

Table Tennis, Judo, Athletics, Chess, Wrestling, Taekando and Badminton are the seven events the state athletes will compete for at Unilorin 2016.

In their last outing at Abuja 2013, Kogi won one gold, two silver and three bronze and will be hoping against all odds to better their previous showing in Ilorin.

It would recalled that Cross Rivers State emerged the overall winner of the maiden edition held in Abuja in 2013 ahead of Akwa Ibom and Delta state.

Failure by any accredited state to attend the National Youth Games attract five million naira fine and two years ban from all national sporting event.
