Why Classical Music is not popular in Nigeria-University Don

A University Don and Head of Music Department, Delta State University, Abraka, Prof. I.O. Idamoyibo says Classical Music is not popular in Nigeria “because it is not patronized”.

He made the assertion Sunday December 4 in Warri, Delta State, during the maiden Classical Music Concert held by Exquisite Music Society, E-MUS under the sponsorship of Warri based hospitality destination, Open Heavens Hotel-Ifiekporo.

Prof. Idamoyibo expressed delight that the orientation of Classical Music is gradually developing in Nigeria and enjoying increased patronage, saying the invite extended to Delta State University Orchestral Group to perform at Delta @ 25 held August 2016 attests to the growing popularity of Classical Music.

Earlier in an address, Managing Director of Afripoint Global Nigeria Limited, Managers of Open Heavens Hotel, Ifiekporo, Mr. Barry Eboma said the hotel is poised to promote Classical Music and make it accessible as well as affordable to the people of Warri by empowering young people like Exquisite Music Society, E-MUS to make them useful and engage in more creative ventures.

Mr. Eboma averred, “I am a lover of Classical Music and our (Open Heavens Hotel) intent is to promote and help make Classical Music accessible and affordable to the people of Warri, provide opportunity for young people to succeed, thrive and add value to the community through Classical Music”.

He disclosed plans to organize Classical Music Concert on monthly basis at Open Heavens Hotel, Ifiekporo-Warri for the public without any charge.

Another music expert and retired University Don, Prof. Omamurhomu Solomon Okobia in a remark, made financial obligation in support of the music group and promised to invite them to the Obi of Owa Palace to perform.

Fresh Angle International checks reveal that Exquisite Music Society, E-MUS was founded August 1, 2016 by some young professional Musicians who passed through practical and academic music training at the Department of Music, Delta State University, Abraka.
