Rainstorm kills five people in Kogi

Tragedy struck residents of Lokoja metropolis when rainstorm killed five people including a pregnant woman.

 

The deceased victims were said to have been trapped when a big tree fell across the road at Hydro Junction, Lokoja at about 6pm Saturday, April 8.

 

The storm is coming barely one week when a similar incidence was recorded in Okehi and Ogorimagongo destroying properties worth millions of naira and rendering several homeless.

 

 Eyewitness account revealed that, some of the deceased where inside a tricycle popularly called Kekenapep, while others were passersby scampering for safety when the storm was heavy.

 

 It was learnt that, attempt by residents to rescue them never yielded result as they were all confirmed dead upon arriving a nearby hospital.

 

 When Our Kogi State Correspondent arrived the scene, hundreds of sympathizers were gathered, excavators from the State Government was clearing the road as it obstructed traffic, just as motorist were asked to take another route to their destinations.

 

Expressing sadness, the Administrator of Lokoja Local Government, Shiru Lawal lamented that the incidence remains a great shock to the people of the community, adding that such death have not been recorded in the history of the community.

 

He however stressed the need for the current administration to cut down old trees that could pose dangers when natural disaster occurs.
