24hrs to NAIG Showdown: We didn’t guarantee hiring VTP Trainees-Chevron
Mr. Esimaje Brikinn

Chevron Nigeria Limited, CNL, operator of the NNPC/Chevron Joint Venture says it did not at anytime guarantee “that it would hire the trainees (VTP5/OTP2) at the time of graduation from the program”.

The statement of the oil and gas major which came barely 24 hours to the showdown promised by the National Association of Itsekiri Graduates, NAIG from Wednesday June 28, noted that the trainees were “contacted by the training provider, Prime Atlantic Cegelec Nigeria Limited, PACE and each trainee has a contract for an On-the Job Learning (OJL) trainee position at CNL production facility”.

Chevron’s statement which was credited to the Company’s General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs, PGPA, Esimajae Brikinn and made available to Fresh Angle International Tuesday June 27, stressed that “it is aware of media reports of threat by graduate representatives of Ijaw, Itsekiri and Ilaje ethnic groups from neighbouring communities of Chevron to embark on coordinated industrial action against CNL in 24 hours, if their members in the VTP5/OTP2 Operator/Maintenance Trainees working in CNL are not confirmed as regular employees”.

While noting that the threat to its operators has been reported to the appropriate authorities, Chevron averred, “the safety of our workforce and the communities where we have operations are highest priority”.

Chevron added that it wishes to clarify, “the company’s effort to sponsor eligible trainees for Operations & Maintenance Vocational Training Program (VTP) was in accordance with its goal to help build skills and capacities of the trainees to become more competitive in Nigeria economy”.
