INTRODUCTION: Sequel to the incident of Friday, 15th September, 2017, at Abraka market, Asaba where four persons were killed at the instance of the Commissioner of Police, Delta Command, CP. Zanna M. Ibrahim, psc a meeting was convoked on 16th September, 2017, between 4pm and 6pm at the Police Officers, Mess, Okwe, Asaba.
AIM OF THE MEETING:
i. To commiserate with the friends and relations of the victims,
II.To allay fears and instill confidence in them,
iii. To reassure them and the public of the ability and willingness of the security agencies to provide safety and security in spite of the sad, unwarranted, but isolated indiscriminate shooting incident.
ATTENDANCE:
In attendance at the meeting were the top echelon of the Police, DSS, and the Military in the state on one hand, and on the other, the leadership of the non-indigenes of the state comprising Nupes, Idomas, Tivs, Hausa-Fulanis, Biroms, Igalas etc, and representatives of the Human-rights groups and the press.(See annexure 1 for the attendance list).
COMMUNIQUÉ:
In the course of the meeting, the following resolutions were arrived at, viz:
* All the stakeholders condemned the attack as unwarranted and provocative.
* That the Police and the army be appreciated for their prompt response to the attack which also resulted in the timely arrest of the alleged perpetrators of this dastardly act.
* Emphasized the need for opening and strengthening of more channels of easy communication with the Police and other security agencies.
*The need to develop and improve on security in non-indigenous communities and settlements across the state.
* The meeting called for sustained peaceful co-existence between the non-indigenes, especially, herdsmen and their host communities.
* The non-indigenous Communities resolved not to leave Delta State and to continue to add value to the state and the country at large.
* Called on government to empower recognized vigilante groups in the state to help police the state.
* Called for more vigilance amongst the people and for timely information and report of incidents to the security agencies.
* Called for timely investigation and prosecution of the culprits.
*Called for government intervention as a palliative to families of the deceased persons and the injured.
*Condemned in its entirety the activities of secessionists’ agitators and pledged unalloyed support for the corporate existence of Nigeria.
