Government is committed to promote, preserve Ijaw culture – Ijaw Affairs Commissioner


Bayelsa State Commissioner for Culture and Ijaw National Affairs, Hon. Dressman Austin, has restated that restoration government is always committed in the promotion, protection and preservation of Ijaw culture and language in the State.

Hon. Dressman said the core objective of the establishment  of Ijaw National Academy at Kaiama in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area is to promote and preserve cultural heritage of Ijaw people through education, while encouraging Bayelsans to take full advantage of the golden opportunity to enroll their children and ward(s) to in school to have quality/assured education.

Our Bayelsa State Correspondent reports that Hon. Dressman made the statement during the Inter-Ministerial and Agency Briefing in Yenagoa, organized by the Bayelsa State Ministry of Information and Orientation and led by Mr. Daniel-lworiso Markson, saying the essence of the establishment of the ministry is to promote; integrate, protect and preserve cultural heritage and language to bring unity and peace among Ijaw ethnic nationality.

Hon. Dressman advised Ijaw people to be focused and committed to the cause of Ijaw struggle and to always speak one indivisible voice to strengthen the unity and peace to promote the Ijaw nation to a greater height, stressing that the restructuring of Nigeria will be the only panacea for the numerous problems prevailing the nation.

To promote and preserve the Ijaw Culture, the Commissioner said every Friday has been designed and made compulsory for the dressing of Ijaw attire, adding that there is reward for those that comply with the law in the State.

He further said several books and journals have been written and produced in the Ijaw dialect which is used as teaching materials in schools and offices to enable them write and speak in the Ijaw dialect.

According to him, restoration government has embarked on capital projects such as Ijaw heroes memorial park, construction of 400 Sitter Pavilion, construction of Ijaw House all are geared to honor the distinguished sons and daughters of Ijaw nation and preserving the cultural heritage of the people, adding that most of the projects under construction will be soon be ready for commissioning.

In her part, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Ebiere Irene  Jenakumo said restoration government has trained over 400 women in different skills acquisition to enable them contribute their quota to the development of the State and reduce poverty in the State.

Hon. Jenakumo noted that her ministry in collaboration with other reputable agencies had involved in the training of birth attendant in tackling of the problem of Maternal and Infant Mortality, adding that the increase cases of rape and child defilement has drastically reduced in the State.

According to her, the restoration government in view to impact lives, gave monthly stipends and welfare package to the elderly ones, physically challenged persons, widows and widower to alleviate their plights in the State.
