Warri South to tackle poor sanitary condition, inaugurates 22-man committee

A 22-man Environmental Sanitation/Beautification Committee saddled with the task of improving the sanitary condition of Warri was on Friday February 23 inaugurated by Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area, Hon. Michael Tidi.

The committee which has 19-point mandate, including ensuring that every premises in Warri South Local Government Area “has functional latrines, soak-away pits and sanitary conveniences to dispose of the waste water and feaces” is also authorized to “demolish all illegal and unapproved structures in the Local Government Area”.

Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area, Hon. Michael Tidi in an address disclosed that about 60% of residents in the council area were yet to key into the private sector arrangement for waste management, “hence the indiscriminate and uncontrolled dumping of waste on our roads and streets, thereby grossly depleting the aesthetics of our council area”.

Hon. Tidi noted that members of the committee “has the mandate to deal ruthlessly with any landlord/tenant and other corporate bodies that fail to register” with Warri South Council approved private waste collectors.

The 22-member committee has Comrade Johnson Diawan as Chairman, Mr. Kenneth George as Vice and the Warri South Council Head of Environment Department, Comrade Solomon Umukoro as Secretary.

The Warri South Council Supervisor for Environment, Patricia Edun, representatives of the Police ‘A’ and ‘B’ Divisions in Warri, National Orientation Agency, NSCDC and Non-Governmental Organizations are also members of the committee.

Secretary of the Committee, Comrade Solomon Umukoro who responded on behalf of others, assured the Warri South Council Boss that with the caliber of persons in the committee, they will deliver on the 19-point mandate given them.
