Delta State Teachers’ Social Security and Investment Scheme, DSTSSIS, on Monday November 18, concluded the payment of seven hundred and seventeen million, four hundred and twenty-six thousand, six hundred and twenty naira (N 717, 426, 620) for 1, 451 retired teachers, across Delta State, with the disbursement of Cheques to 32 retired teachers in Warri South Local Government Area.

Chairman of DSTSSIS, Comrade Pat. Ogheghe, who addressed the retirees shortly before the Cheques of not less than five hundred thousand naira each, was presented to the beneficiaries, averred that the exercise was attestation to the fact that the teachers made no mistake in participating in the welfare scheme.

While noting that disbursement clears outstanding payment for 2018 and parts of 2019 retired teachers, in both primary and secondary schools in the state, Comrade Ogheghe, assured that the scheme will get better as a result of accountability and integrity of the fund managers.

Delta State Secretary of Nigeria Union of Teachers and the State Coordinator of DSTSSIS, Comrade Dan. Basime, in his remarks, explained that the disbursement of Cheques was brought to doorsteps of the retirees, to avoid a situation where they would have gone through the stress of travelling to Asaba, the state capital.

While explaining the rationale behind inviting representatives of government agencies such as the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Post Primary Education Board, PPEB, and the State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, to witness the disbursement of Cheques to the retirees, Comrade Basime, noted that it was equally vital to show accountability and integrity, so as to clear all doubts associated with the welfare scheme.

Chairman of NUT, Warri South Chapter, Comrade Ishmael Ukuejawa, in his opening brief, described the DSTSSIS as one of the best programmes ever had in Nigeria, in terms of welfare of public/civil servants.

Two of the retirees, who spoke on behalf of others, Mr. Emmanuel Oleju and Madam Sagay Margaret Omagbemi, admonished serving teachers not to panic, but support the scheme.
