KSU Law Clinic interface with State Ministry of Justice, Security Agencies


 

Kogi State Security Agencies have expressed awareness and implementation of the 2017 Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) amidst challenges faced in some of the basic tenant of the law.

This was made known during a one day interface seminar between Kogi State University Anyigba Law Clinic, Ministry of Justice and various heads of security agencies in the State at Nigeria Bar Association Complex in Lokoja.

In his opening remark, the State Area Commander of Police, Ugo Ogbodo lauded the basic tenant of the law, noting that it has drastically help in carrying out criminal cases and prosecution.

According to him, the Police force has to a large extent enjoy adequate corporation from the State Ministry of Justice and other security agencies while acknowledging the effort of the KSU Law Clinic in ensuring free legal services for those who cannot afford the fees.

Earlier in his overview, a representative from the Ministry of Justice, Bar. Ayobami Victor Olorunfemi noted that the law introduces provision to criminal justice with the aim of solving pending trials.

Among other tenants of the law as reviewed by Bar. Ayobami are the right of a suspect, the role of security agencies in crime persecution and the role of the judiciary.

He further called for synergy from various security agencies and Ministry of Justice to enhance speedy prosecution of criminal cases.

In his interaction with press men, the head of KSU Law Clinic, Bar. Epka Ali Opkanachi thanked the special invited guest for honoring the invitation.

He noted that the gathering has to a large extent build the confidence of the law student present at the seminar, as they are now assured of the state security agencies of their total support in carrying out their duty.

Bar. Ekpa stressed that the major aim of the Law Clinic is to teach in practical the law student the act of engaging in community services, bringing justice to the society and how not to prioritize money over their duty.

He further added that the Law Clinic is poised at giving representation to those who cannot afford legal charges and as well fight for prison inmates who are due for bail.

In their various remarks, the state Area Commander of Police, Ugo Ogbodo, Head of Kogi State DSS, Ola Legal, Superintendent of Prison, Onuh Omoru, Representative from state Civil Defense all decried the lack of basic logistic available at their disposer in implementing some of the basic tenant of the law.

It was  gathered that Kogi State is one of the first eight states in the country to have effectively domesticated the Administration of Criminal Justice law passed into law in 2017.

Our Kogi State Correspondent reports that the ACJL seeks to revolutionize the whole process of criminal justice system by ensuring speedy dispensation of justice.
