To say thatthe recurrent wave of dastardly attacks on innocent Nigerians, particularlyChristians in the Northern region of the country is frightening is putting itmildly. Most worrisome is the fact that as soon as these wicked attacks arecarried out, prominent Moslem leaders will publicly condemn the sect andsubsequently disown them as non Moslem faithful. The position of these Moslemleaders appears to have cast a dark cloud in the minds of both the federalgovernment and Christian leaders across the country.
Despite allthe denials of the dreaded Islamic sect by Moslem leaders in the North, nothingis being done by them to expose those behind these senseless killings, whilethe leadership of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN appears to be threadingsoftly in order not to fuel rising tension.
If recentstatements credited to CAN leadership in the North are anything to go by, thensomething urgent need to be done to stop the killing of innocent Nigerians. There are those who opined that despite the continuous denial of Boko Haramsect by Islamic leaders, the activity of the group may be enjoying the supportof some Islamic and political leaders in the North over perceived misgivings ofPresident Goodluck Jonathan’s administration. Those within this school ofthought are of the opinion that the sect is determined to frustrate theJonathan administration with a view to returning power to the North in 2015against the wishes of the South Easterners.
Untilprominent Moslem leaders in the North openly expose members of Boko Haram andsecurity agencies put a stop in their activities, the position of Moslemleaders who openly condemn the activities of the sect will forever remain understrong scrutiny.
