OBJ’s Invitation is a waste of Rivers resources—PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Rivers State Chapter has expressed displeasure over what it described as the continued wastage of Rivers State resources by the Amaechi government, saying the invitation of the Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to the State to commission some projects executed by the Amaechi administration is one of the several means of misappropriating tax payers money in the state.

The Party in a statement signed by Special Adviser, on Media to the Rivers State PDP Chairman, Jerry Needam claimed that volumes of financial resources, amounting to N1bn (One Billion Naira) were spent for the hosting of the former President by the Rivers State government, wondering why such action by the Governor when the State is in dire need of funds to complete all abandoned projects and sundry issues.

The Party observed that considering the high level of unemployment and uncertainties in the State, it was wrong for Gov. Amaechi to embark on such extravagant venture, just to impress the former President and to play to the gallery.

Amongst other things, the PDP said it has information that the said amount was expended on mobilization of people to welcome their guests, emergency roads painting, publicity, advertorials, media live coverage, logistics, gifts for the former president and miscellaneous expenses.

The PDP says it is irked by the fact that a lot of things are at standstill owing to non availability of funds, which stems from the bankrupt status of the State's treasury, saying rather than using such huge amount to at least address the issues of the non-payment of TIMARIV and the 13 thousand recently recruited teachers, the Governor prefers wasting it on a mere image laundering event.

The Party called on Rivers people and well meaning Nigerians to call on Governor Amaechi to order, from further wasting Rivers resources.
