Election Stalemate: National Secretariat Sets Up Caretaker Committee for NUJ Delta

Following the failure of the Credentials Committee to conduct election for the Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, the National Secretariat of the Union had inaugurated a Caretaker Committee to pilot the affairs of the Council and conduct election in the next two months.

The NUJ Zone F Secretary, Comrade Bassey Eyoh Ph.D acting on the mandate of the National Secretariat, had inaugurated a 7-man Caretaker Committee comprising of Chairmen and Secretaries of Chapels as stipulated in the Constitution of NUJ (Article 5C Section 9c).

From the composition of the Committee, the Chairman of Delta Broadcasting Service, DBS Asaba Chapel, Comrade Gilbert Olie was appointed to Head the Committee while the Secretary of the Correspondents' Chapel Asaba, Comrade Dominic Adewole was made the Secretary of the Committee.

Others making up membership of the Committee are Comrade Emmanuel Ekebe, Chairman of Isoko Correspondents' Chapel, Comrade Dele Fasan, Secretary of the Correspondents' Chapel Warri, Comrade Florence Nwabuonwu, Acting Chairman of the State Information Chapel, Comrade Kenneth Orusi, Secretary of the Indigenous Correspondents' Chapel and Comrade Tessy Coker, Secretary of the NTA Asaba Chapel.

Recall that the election of the State Council scheduled for July 2, 2020, was botched due to the inability of the Credentials Committee to resolve a prominent constitutional disagreement bordering on those to vote amongst parties, thereby creating a stalemate in the election.

As a result of the stalemate, the Chairmen and Secretaries of Chapels had to take over as provided by the NUJ Constitution to forestall a lacuna and breakdown of law in the event that vacuum is created in the leadership of the Union.

The National Secretariat had therefore, urged members of the Union in the State to remain calm and cooperate with the Caretaker Committee within this period of two months as they pilot the affairs of the Council.
