The Chairman, House Committee on Health in Delta State House of Assembly, Dr. Augustine Uroye, says he and 24 other members of the House, sponsored the Delta State Anti Discrimination and Protection Bill 2020, to end stigmatization and discrimination against persons living with HIV / AIDS in the state.

Dr. Uroye, a one - time Transition Committee Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area and member representing Warri South Constituency 1 in the State House of Assembly, noted that stigmatization and discrimination had hampered the fight against HIV / AIDS scourge in the country, as, "people find it difficult to know their status, due to fear of stigmatization" should they test positive.

The lawmaker, who presented the bill during plenary, averred that Nigeria has the second largest HIV / AIDS status in the world at 1.8 million positive cases, according to survey.

He said the increasing cases of HIV / AIDS in the country, has been fueled by stigmatization and discrimination.

The Bill, which scaled through second reading and has been referred to the House Committee on Health for further consideration, was supported by several members of the House during plenary.

Hon. Tim Owhefere, Chief Solomon Igrakpata, Hon. Matthew Opuoru and Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, were among lawmakers that spoke in favour of the bill during plenary.
