In a bid to forestall further sexual abuse of vulnerable kids who are deaf, blind and have special needs, an NGO in Nigeria, the Purple Wand Shelter Initiative is set to organize a one-month self defense class for kids in Abuja in November.

Speaking with Fresh Angle International Editorial Assistant Special Project, Victory Ejoh, the CEO of the NGO, Miss Ufuoma Omimi-Okoro, who is also a legal pratictioner and advocate for the blind, deaf and special needs kids' stated that since its formation in 2014 and registration in CAC five years after, have tried several cases most of which are still in court.

The Corporate and Commercial law graduate of Olabisi Onabanjo University, stated that the defense training for the kids became imperative due to the rising rate of sexual abuse being faced not only by the vulnerable kids but by young girls. She opined that a lot of the vulnerable kids were abused sexually and because they cannot express themselves, most of the perpetrators go unpunished, but all that will change after their defense training.

While disclosing that the Organization was formed out of her passion to defend the defenseless in the society, pointed out the challenges it has faced ranging from slow justice system due to incessant adjournment, alleged bribery and corruption of some offenders who try to pay off the authorities, and the greatest remains poverty as some victims refuse to pursue justice when their rights are infringed upon, and instead they are cajoled into taking stipends to forego justice.

The down to earth CEO of Purple Wand Shelter Initiative confided that the pillars of her NGO are her mum, Mrs. Martha Iweh-Okoro, her staff, friends and sponsors who make her different projects become a reality. Some of which are protection against sexual abuse (PANTS rule), distribution of sanitary pads before and during the Menstrual Hygiene day which was marked on May 28, while the distribution were in batches from February to May 2020. Also, taking kids for excursion and organizing skills acquisition for them, one of which is coming up in December.
