Delta State Commissioner for Special Duties, Government House Asaba, Chief Henry Afure Sakpra, says a set of “disgruntled elements” who accused him of working to undermine the interest of the Urhobo 2023 gubernatorial polls, “by aligning with forces outside Delta with the intention of being a Deputy Governor”, are, “determined to paint me as an unbridled political bigot without respect for constituted authority”.
Hon. Sakpra made the statement earlier today, Friday October 16 at his country home in Udu, Delta State, while briefing the press on the politics of 2023 and, “the malicious rumours making the rounds on his purported role in the scheme of things”.
The Commissioner, having emphasized that as a politician of note in Delta State and a serving member of the State Executive Council, “who is aware of the rotation arrangement, gravitating the Governorship position to Delta Central in 2023”, bared his mind on the “incongruous role being played by some unscrupulous elements”.
He categorically stated that he had all it takes to be a governor and as such, would not settle for a deputy governor position as alleged, considering his political trail as a one-time Councilor, Vice Chairman and Chairman of Udu Council before his current appointment as a Commissioner since 2015. Academically, he is a master degree holder.
"I cannot be ignorant of the rotation arrangement in place which gravitates the position of Governor to Delta Central in 2023 and as an illustrious Urhobo son, nothing gladdens my heart better than the opportunity for Urhobo to yet again, produce the Governor of Delta State. As an illustrious son of Urhobo, that is where I stand. Nothing can impel me to stand in the way of Urhobo producing the next governor of the State," he said.
"These baseless and unfounded rumours will not deter me in my unmitigated support for the actualization of Urhobo governor, come 2023," he further stated.
While appreciating his Leader, Icon, Mentor, Inspiration and political benefactor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, Chief Sakpra gave thanks to God for the grace placed on him to have gotten to his present level, noting that "devious scheming, malicious propaganda and barefaced lies against perceived political opponents cannot get anywhere because, all power belongs to God."
Speaking earlier, the Chairman, Board of Directors of Urhobo Youth Leaders Association, UYLA, Chief West Ham Adehor and President of the body, Hon Anthony Ofoni, said they were moving round Urhobo leaders and communities to mobilize support towards actualisation of Urhobo Governorship in 2023.
The UYLA leaders said they are non-partisan and not behind any particular aspirant, but are pursuing the common goal of making an Urhobo man the governor in 2023.
They appealed to Deltans from other ethnic nationalities to respect the mutual understanding of rotation and support Urhobo for Governor in 2023.
A cross section of leaders from all communities and kingdoms in Urhobo land were present during the courtesy call.
