Pan Itsekiri socio-cultural group, Itsekiri Consolidated Movement, ICM has stressed the need for all stakeholders to stick to the power rotation agreement in Warri South-West local government area so as to sustain the prevailing peace in the area.
The Itsekiri Consolidated Movement, ICM in a statement made available to Newsmen in Warri, Delta State declared that the call “has become vitally important following speculations that the immediate past elected Chairman of Warri South-West local government, Hon. George Ekpemupolo as well as other aspirants of Ijaw extraction are nursing ambition to vie for the council’s plum job in the October 25, 2014 local government election”.
According to the statement signed by ICM Chairman, Oritsegbemi Besidone and Public Relations Officer, Franklin Metsese, crises are often caused “when political stakeholders fail to respect gentleman agreement on power rotation and sharing”.
The Itsekiri group posited that after George Ekpemupolo served his three-year tenure as chairman of Warri South-West and another Ijaw man, Rev. Sam Ken was appointed Transition Committee Chairman of the local government, “It is only logical that Itsekiri of Warri South-West local government have a shot at the council’s chairmanship position in the forthcoming local government poll based on the power rotation principle”.
ICM equally noted that the wisdom of PDP founding fathers in the state to maintain a power sharing agreement in Warri North and Warri South local government areas which “makes Itsekiri produce chairmen, Ijaw and Urhobo having the vice chairmanship slots respectively in the two local government should be sustained in the spirit of mutual respect,” stressing that “any attempt to abort the power rotation and sharing agreement may spark off avoidable crisis in Warri which will affect all Deltans.”
