The National Association of Itsekiri Students, NAIS has doled out scholarships estimated at N 1.3 million to 30 indigent students studying at various tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
Briefing a cross section of the beneficiaries at Agbeje Primary School, Ugbuwangue in Warri, National President of NAIS, Augustine Leleji noted that he was particularly delighted at the prompt response of Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Otumara towards the scholarship programme when he led other executive members of the association to request the commissioner’s assistance in sponsoring indigent students of Itsekiri extraction.
Responding, Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Otumara stated that his decision to offer scholarships to 28 indigent Itsekiri undergraduates is borne out of his desire to move Itsekiri nation forward.
Dr. Otumara who was represented by his Special Assistant, Mr. Andrew Megbele promised to sponsor more scholarships in the NAIS education scheme and enjoined Itsekiri students to learn as well as teach Itsekiri language to save it from extinction.
He advised the scholarship beneficiaries to take their studies seriously and tasked them to extend similar largesse to other Itsekiris on completing their education.
One of the beneficiaries, Jemirieyigbe Gift, a student of Petroleum Training Institute, Effurun who responded on behalf of others thanked Dr. Otumara and Hon. Daniel Reyeniejufor the gesture and promised to remain focused in their academic pursuit.
