Okpe Union marks 91st anniversary, demands establishment of higher institution in Okpe Clan

The apex socio-cultural pressure group of Okpe people in Delta State, the Okpe Union, has celebrated her 91st anniversary.

 

The group, was reportedly founded in 1930 and registered officially in 1934 under the Corporate Affairs Commission.

 

In marking her 91st anniversary, the Okpe Union, held a press conference Sunday May 16 at her National Secretariat, Adaene Square, Orerokpe. 

 

It was presided over by the Interim President-General, Prof. Emurobome Idolor and other National Interim Executive from all branches as well as stakeholders from the diaspora.

 

The Union, expressed deep concern over the insecurity in Nigeria, saying: "It gives everyone concern that we can't be complacent and uniformed of its long/short term negative, psychological and economic effect on our people. In the light of the above, Okpe Day celebration should be decisively done with caution".

 

They want the Delta State Government to consider establishing a higher institution in Okpe Clan, noting that the previous administration proposed Sapele Polytechnic, Elume and the current administration has not attended to it, appealing to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to make the proposed institution functional as quick as possible.

 

The Okpe Union Interim National President, Prof. Idolor, commended Dr. Okowa, “for the completion and commissioning of Oha Bridge / Access Road” and supported the 17 Southern Governors 12-point resolution, which include the banning of open grazing.

The Okpe leadership body, appealed to the two prominent political parties in the state to zone their governorship ticket to Okpe, in order for Okpe to produce the governor of Delta State come 2023.

 

They commended the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Orhue I, “for his fatherly role in uniting Okpe people and the Okpe Leaders of Thought as well as other relevant stakeholders for their support to the Okpe Union”.

 

The Interim National Executive of the Okpe Union reeled out some of her achievements to include reactivation of the traditional ruler-ship stool and tertiary scholarship for indigenes to study abroad.
