Publishers of Community newspapers and magazines in Delta State today, Friday July 11, 2014 rejected five hundred thousand naira honorarium allegedly given to them by the Delta State government after a briefing at Government House Press Centre, Asaba.
Feelers from Asaba say the Publishers of Community newspapers and magazines in the state despite having three factions spoke in one voice in anger, expressing their disappointment directly to the Governor Uduaghan’s Press Secretary, Mr. Sony Oghefere.
The factional leaders, including Publishers of Grassroots Trumpet International and Warri Voice newspaper reportedly told the Governor’s Press Secretary that the N500, 000.00 honorarium was an insult to them, considering the N2.3 million allegedly given to Warri Correspondents’ Chapel and the Delta State Council of Nigerian Union of Journalists.
The Governor’s Press Secretary reportedly showed the publishers the breakdown to confirm the amount approved for them as fallout of the briefing.
The publishers who rejected the money have reportedly fixed a general meeting for Tuesday July 15, 2014 to find a way forward for the situation which has become a recurring decimal.
