There was pandemonium in Amakohia Ubi autonomous community in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo state, as a five- month- old baby was thrown into a boiling soup.
Eye witness in the community, who disclosed the incident to Newsmen, said that a masquerade chased a 10-year- old girl from outside to the backyard of the house where she was looking after the baby. Unknown to the masquerade and the girl, there was a boiling soup at the backyard of the house.
According to the witness, the masquerade only stopped his chase after realizing that the five month- old baby boy had slipped from the hands of the girl and fell into the large boiling pot of soup. Quick efforts to revive the baby by some good Samaritans after rushing him to a nearby hospital, proved abortive, as the baby was pronounced dead by the doctors, It was gathered that the baby was the first child of his parents, who got married recently.
The witness further disclosed that the Amakohia Masquerade Festival, regarded as “Owu,” was the most dreaded festival in the state as it is characterized by wanton display of charms and harassment of people by the masquerade.
