Delta government evicts illegal occupants of Warri Market
Section of the demolished Ogbe-Ijaw market

After successfully demolishing alleged illegal structures within the Warri Royal Cemetery radius in Ifie, Warri South local government area few weeks ago, the Delta State Special Task Force on Environmental Sanitation led by the State Commission for Environment, Mr. Frank Omare today (July 25) evicted illegal occupants of the controversial Ogbe-Ijaw market in Warri and brought down all illegal structures within and around the market.

The incomplete market which was skeletally constructed by the Felix Ibru administration in what was seen by some as a move to pacify the Ijaws after Igbudu and Pessu markets were seen as basically for the Urhobos and Itsekiris respectively have since been occupied by some Ijaws who migrated from neighbouring riverine communities.

The Delta State government had given the occupants who virtually turned the incomplete market to their personal homes notice which elapsed Wednesday July 23, 2014 before coming down heavy on the occupants and their illegally constructed attachments today with strong security presence.

An eye witness told Our Correspondent that the eagle eyed security details that followed the State Special Task Force seized phones and cameras of those who attempted to take shots of the exercise.
