LG Autonomy: NULGE declares September 1 as fasting and prayer day in all 774 LGCs

The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, has declared tomorrow, Wednesday September 1, as fasting and prayer day, to actualize the much anticipated local government autonomy in Nigeria.

Fresh Angle International understands that the prayer session, is expected to hold at the Gate or entrance of the Local Government Council Secretariat of all the 774 Councils in Nigeria, between 11:45am-12:30pm.

The union in a statement addressed to all National Officers, State Presidents, Zonal/State Secretaries, the 36 state chapters and the FCT, noted: “As you are all aware, the struggle for the autonomy of Local Government in Nigeria, has been a relentless battle by the Union for over two decades. For two occasions, the National Assembly has graciously passed the bill granting Autonomy to Local Governments but majority of the Governors prevented their State Houses of Assembly to pass same as required by the Constitution.

“In the ongoing review exercise by the 9th National Assembly, it becomes imperative to avoid a repeat of the previous situations by taking the matter to the Almighty God”.

The statement, signed by the General-Secretary of NULGE, Comrade Chukuemeke Aguonye, added: “In view of the above, I have the directive to inform you about the resolve of the National Leadership of the Union to mobilize all members in the 774 Local Government Councils across the country for a Special Fasting and Prayer for God to intervene in this matter. The Special Fasting and Prayer is scheduled as follows:

The prayer session should be in both Muslim and Christian version as the case may be. Please note that this fasting and prayer is mandatory and should be done simultaneously across the 774 Councils at the same time. All Staff of NULGE should join the prayer session in the nearest Local Government Council to the State Secretariat. As stated earlier, this becomes necessary for the divine intervention of the Almighty Allah in this struggle”.
