Catholic Priest cautions Christians against materialism

Christians in the country have been cautioned against amassing too much wealth for themselves while here on earth if they genuinely desire to make heaven.

Catholic Priest, Rev. Victor Otoro gave the advice at Our Lady of the Waters Catholic Church, Bomadi while conducting a mass.

Rev. Otoro who took his text from the Book of Matthew 16:21-27 reminded the congregation that material and spiritual things cannot go together and advised Christians who wish to live eternal life “to refrain from the endless search for material things and prepare themselves for heaven”.

According to the cleric, “no one can make heaven with the love of earthly things. Some people acquire more than they actually need. Imagine acquiring so many cars, building houses here and there, owning property everywhere and having millions in account, much more than you can spend, yet you lose your soul”, Otoro asks rhetorically, just as he said “you cannot be a true Christian with this senseless desire to amass wealth”

While calling on Christians to show discipline in every aspects of their daily lives, the Rev. Father urged them to always give helping hand to the needy amongst their fellow members in the congregation, saying “those with a lot more clothing and shoes in their boxes can give out some to others who are in dire need”.

Otoro further told the congregation that God does not take pleasure in the expensive display of affluence, “as it is amongst some Christians who spend much on jewelries and trinkets” even as he called on them to live a modest and austere life in their pursuit for spiritual things, which according to him “can lead them to heaven”.
