The empty promises of government towards the people and the sensational as well as biased reportage of incidence of violence have been attributed as reasons behind the increasing wave of insecurity in Nigeria.
This was the position of two academics, Dr. John Orhewere and Mr. James Onusu while delivering papers during the first ever seminar recently held by the department of Mass Communication,Federal Polytechnic Auchi, Edo State.
In a paper titled, “The Nigerian Mass Media and Challenges of National Security”, Dr. John Orhewere accused a privately owned station in Edo State, Independent Television, ITV off avourable reportage of Lucky Igbinedion administration in the state despite non performance. He posited that such unprofessional conduct of the media which portrays non performance of political leaders in good light has increased incidence of kidnapping, terrorism and armed robbery.
Another resource person, Mr.James Onusu who spoke on “The Nigerian Mass Media and the Glorification of Terrorism: The Need for Constraint”, opined that the prominence being given to the activities of Islamic sect, Boko Haram by the media is encouraging their terrorist attacks. He therefore tasked the media to exercise restraint in their reportage in order not to worsen the already tense security situation in the country.
