As Nigerians and journalists search for the true killer of Benson Ogedegbe, the head of vigilante group in Oghara, Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State, this reporter has dug out those behind the killing which is currently hanging on the head of the 19th battalion commandant, Lt. Colonel Aminu Umar.
Investigative reports revealed that contrary to what some media houses reported that Lieutenant Colonel Aminu Umar was called by the alleged Army killer of Ogedegbe, Umar was not aware of the movement of any soldier outside their base for such heinous crime against humanity.
The 19th battalion according to information obtained from highly placed sources, have been the nightmare of the criminals and oil bunkers parading the Koko Waterways and destroying drums of illegal gotten crude oil by setting them ablaze and expressed shock on how they will hunt a citizen, especially one who assists in securing the Oghara community.
When our team of reporters visited the Oghara police station, one of them who did not want his name in print revealed that Benson Ogedegbe may have been killed by criminals who he and his vigilant group stopped from operating in the region.
"We believe that the boys who killed Benson are criminals who wore army uniform, probably thinking that they could kidnap him if they accosted him on soldiers’ uniform.
"If you check where he was shot, under the abdomen, security officials rarely shoot that area. Most times, they shoot criminals directly on the head or chest and they won't do so on broad daylight like you people are reporting", the source confided.
Some of the villagers who spoke to us explained that it was true that Benson had issues with the army, but it may have been based on his vigilant group mode of operation, which some of them (residents) have reported as being overboard which needed caution from the government security agencies. They told our reporters that the peace experienced in Oghara and Ethiope West is due to the army presence and not the Ogedegbe led vigilante.
A palace source completely exonerated the 19th brigade commander, Umar, whom they described as being too wicked for criminals in the area. "If those criminals get their way, no be Ogedegbe dem go kill but na the soldiers oga."
As at the time the vigilante leader was killed by the criminals, we have it on good authority that he was driving his ash coloured Mazda car, said to be bought for him by former Ethiope West Local Government Chairman, Jerry Wilson to go and sign register in the school as a game teacher.
