TUC hails Kogi Govt. on  Girl Child Protection


The Trade Union Congress, (TUC) has commended the Kogi State Government for playing a leadership role in protecting the girl Child in Nigeria.
 
The State Chairman, TUC Comrade Ranti Mathew Ojo gave the commendation on Tuesday, when TUC Women Commission, Kogi State Chapter marked the 2022 International Day of the Girl Child held in Crowder Memorial College Lokoja.
 
Comrade Ojo noted that the Government, Civil Society alongside Labour are doing wonderfully well in protecting the Girl Child, because of the challenges they are facing in the society.
 
He stressed that, the current administration has worked tirelessly, towards ensuring that the Girl Child right are not trampled upon in any part of the state, stressing that, no nation can develop without the contribution of women in the society.
 
Describing the Girl Child as nation builders who should be adequately protected, Comrade Ojo narrated that, the era of relegating Women to the gutter will no longer be tolerated.
 
Explaining further, the union leader said “Women are good managers that should be protected in our society, so they need our support. I want to advocate that the Nigeria society as a whole should give them the right place and defend them because they are prone to so many evils. And it is only when Government and Society comes out, institutions come out to create this awareness, that all of us can protect the child and have a better society and future.
 
He explained that the Girl Child have been exposed to sex abuse, molestation, rape which has made them loose hope in the Society. “
 
“There was a time in Kogi State that a highly played person allegedly rape a Woman. So that is a critical area that all of us must join hands to condemn and also tell them how to protect themselves from this menace of evil” he added.
 
In her presentation, the guest speaker Eunice Abimbola Agbogun who is the Executive Director, Challenged Parenthood Initiative, (CPI) recalled that, on December 19th 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to declare October 11th as the international day of the girl child.
 
She noted that, the day is marked to educate the public on issues of concerns, as institutions at various level mobilizes political will and resources to address global problems and to celebrate and reinforce achievement of humanity.
 
She emphasized that the plight of the girl child opens people’s eyes on how to change their attitudes and behaviors towards women and girl.
 
According to her, discrimination against women is rampart and girls are often seen as a burden on the family, resulting in them facing disadvantages in areas of health, education, and other aspect of upbringing.
 
Agbogun is of the view that, education and awareness can contribute to helping improve attitudes towards the nation female population.
 
Our Kogi State Correspondent reports that, students who attended the 2022 International Day of the Girls Child at Crowder Memorial College Lokoja, carried various inscription making the day ranging from “Say no to child molestation, “say no to violence of the girl child, say no to physical abuse, say no to sexual abuse, say no to rape, and say no to girl inferiority.
 
It could be recalled that, the United Nations holds the annual International Day of the Girl Child on October 11 to promote girls’ rights and highlight gender inequalities all over the world. The theme for 2022 world girl child day is; our time is now, our rights, our future.
