The Delta State Local Government Election Tribunal sitting in Warri has nullified the Councillorship election for Ward 9, Koko, Warri North Council Area and ordered the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate, Mrs. Abigail Tosan Anighoro acclaimed to have won the election to vacate the seat immediately.
The Tribunal also ordered the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission, DSIEC, to within 30-days conduct another election into the Ward 9 seat in suit No. DT/EPT/LG/W/16/2014 brought before it by the All Progressives Congress, APC candidate, Comrade Gboye Omagbitse Omatsola.
The APC candidate approached the Tribunal to challenge the victory of the PDP candidate in the October 25, 2014 Council Elections in the state, saying that the said elections were marred by gross irregularities and that no elections took place in Ward 9.
Delivering the three-member Tribunal judgment on Friday 24, the Chairman, A.T. Akujobi ordered DSIEC to conduct a fresh election within 30 days and asked the PDP candidate to vacate the seat with immediate effect. The other members of the Tribunal are: E.A Egbedi, 1st member and A.E Oghenejabor, 2nd member respectively.
Speaking shortly to newsmen after the judgment, Petitioners’ Counsel, Emalson Akpotaire and chairman of the APC in Warri North, Mr. Macson Ebiareneyin described the Tribunal’s judgment as a signal of the many good things to come and victory for democracy, noting that they have more cases against the PDP and are very hopeful of victory.
