People under the age of 50 or 67 percent of the population are infected with herpes- says WHO
Herpes Simplex Virus

According to a report released by the World Health Organization, more than 3.7 billion people under the age of 50 or 67 percent of the population are infected with herpes simplex virus type 1, which is transmitted by oral-oral contact and causes "cold sores" around the mouth.

While type 2 of the disease typically causes genital herpes, the new report highlights that herpes type 1 is often spread to the genital area through oral sex.

Taken together, the WHO estimates that more than a half-billion people between the ages of 15-49 years have a genital infection caused by either type of the disease, both of which are "infectious and incurable," the organization says.

“Access to education and information on both types of herpes and sexually transmitted infections is critical to protect young people’s health before they become sexually active,” Director WHO’s Department of Reproductive Health and Research, Dr. Marleen Temmerman, said in a news release recently.
