No case of Lassa fever in Warri South-LGC Medical Chief -Freshangle News

The Apex Nurse and Deputy Primary Health Care Coordinator for Warri South Local Government Council, Mrs. Marian Ayemere says there is no confirmed case of Lassa fever in Warri South Local Government Area in particular and Delta State in general.

Mrs. Ayemere who is also the Diseases Surveillance Notification Officer, DSNO for Warri South in an exclusive chat with Fresh Angle International in Warri, explained that Lassa fever is a viral heamorhagic fever caused by viral organism through contamination of Water as well as food by urine and faeces of particular rat specie.

According to her, any case of Lassa fever can only be confirmed if a blood sample is taken to a laboratory at Irrua Specialist Hospital in Edo State.

She listed symptoms of Lassa fever to include high temperature, general weakness (malaise) headache, cough, sow throat, diarrhea and protein-urhia, while the major symptoms are jaundice, deafness, weight loss, bleeding from the eyes, mouth and under the skin.

The Director, Primary Health Care Development, Warri South Local Government Council, Dr. Emmanuel Areh admonished residents of Warri to avoid rats and dirty environment in order to avoid contracting the deadly disease.

According to him, Lassa fever was first discovered in the Nigeria in 1959, even as he insisted that no case has been reported in Warri South Local Government Area.
