Observer Newspaper off newsstands seven months after shutdown, despite Obaseki’s assurance of early return

Edo State Government owned Newspaper, The Nigerian Observer, is still off newspaper stands as at today, Wednesday January 11, despite assurances by the Governor Godwin Obaseki led Edo State Government that the daily tabloid, shutdown Thursday June 30, 2022, would be re-launched within a short time.

The Edo State Government had on Thursday June 30, 2022, shut-down the newspaper, purportedly for one-month and redeployed the staffers to the Edo State Ministry of Communication and Orientation.

A Source from Benin City, Edo State, who spoke to This Newspaper on telephone earlier today, said the newspaper has been running online since shutdown of the hardcopy, with no commitment shown by the Edo State government to re-launch the hardcopy publication.

Fresh Angle International had reported that the position of the state government, which was contained in a government special announcement, explained that the decision was, “in line with the reforms of the state-owned media organisations”, with a view to re-launch the media outfit.

The statement, which was signed by Secretary to the Edo State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq., noted: “All existing staff of the Nigerian Observer are hereby redeployed to the Ministry of Communication and Orientation, with immediate effect, where they will receive further directive on their new responsibilities.

“Members of the reading public and lovers of the Nigerian Observer brand are assured that their darling newspaper titles will return to the stands shortly; better and improved”.
