NBA appoints Committee to supervise conduct of election of new branch executive in Udu

The Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, has appointed a Caretaker Committee to supervise the conduct of an election that would produce a new executive for its Udu Branch in Delta State.

Fresh Angle International, understands that the Caretaker Committee, comprising Ayo Asala, SAN – Chairman, V. F. Monye (Mrs.) – Secretary and Patrick Mekako, Esq – Member, shall administer the affairs of the Branch, effective Sunday June 30, to Sunday July 7.

The President of the NBA, Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, in a statement dated June 30, explained the decision inter-alia: “Whereas the election of new Branch executives for NBA Udu Branch could not be held on 16 June 2024 as previously scheduled.

“Whereas the tenure of the Branch Executive Committee (EXCO), led by Mr. Kingsley Asagba expired on 19 June 2024.

“Whereas the inability to conduct the Branch election before the expiration of the tenure of the said Executive Committee has resulted in a vacancy in the leadership of the Branch.

“AND there being a need to avoid any vacuum in the leadership of the Branch, forestall a breakdown of order, ensure compliance with the provisions of the NBA Constitution and the Uniform Byelaws for Branches.

“I, hereby, pursuant to Section 10(1) of the Uniform Byelaws, appoint a Caretaker Committee for Udu Branch, comprising the following:

1) Ayo Asala, SAN – Chairman

2) V. F. Monye (Mrs) – Secretary

3) Patrick Mekako, Esq – Member

“The Caretaker Committee shall administer the affairs of the Branch beginning from today, 30 June 2024, for the sole purpose of supervising the conduct of the Branch election, which is scheduled to be held on 7 July 2024. The new EXCO shall be sworn-in immediately on the same date or such other date not later than 10 July 2024.

“For avoidance of any doubt, no new process shall be commenced or undertaken by the Caretaker Committee. All the processes, notices, publications and documents issued by the erstwhile Electoral Committee remain valid and shall be adopted by the Caretaker Committee for the purpose of the election. Needless to say, that the mandate of the Branch Electoral Committee also lapsed on 19 June 2024, when the tenure of the Branch EXCO expired.

“I hereby direct the former Chairman, Kingsley Asagba, Esq, and the members of the Executive Committee of Udu Branch, to forthwith, hand-over ALL Branch documents, monies, and properties, howsoever described, to the Caretaker Committee, within 48 hours from the date of this Notice2 to gross misconduct and liable to be reported to the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC).

“I thank members of the Committee for graciously accepting this responsibility and urge them to discharge their duties in accordance with law, without fear or favour.

“Members of the Branch are enjoined to give the Caretaker Committee maximum support and cooperation to ensure smooth transition to a new leadership in the Branch.”
