24-Point Demand: IEEC notifies CP, Delta of fresh protest against Chevron


 

 

The Itsekiri Employment & Empowerment Council, IEEC, has notified the Commissioner of Police, Delta State, of their plan to embark on fresh protest against Chevron Nigeria Limited, CNL, over a 24-point demand, majorly on perceived neglect in employment and award of contracts.

 

In the letter dated July 18 and addressed to the CP, the leadership of IEEC, accused the oil and gas major of refusal: “To employ any of our indigenes, as permanent or contractor staff, as this unpalatable action negate the Nigeria Local Content laws of Federal Republic of Nigeria, also against the oil and gas company cooperate social responsibilities.”

 

The notification, which was signed by the Chairman, Secretary and Public Relations Officer, P.R.O of Itsekirt Employment & Empowerment Council, Engr. Olley Endurance, Comr. Amofeye Tola- John and Mr. Alfred Igbiaye, stated in parts: “With greatest respect for your highly esteem office and position, we the above name council, which to inform you about our protest coming up soon in Western Operation of Chevron Nigeria Ltd.

 

“The Council is made up of 23 Itsekiri oil and gas, producing communities, that are host to Chevron Nigeria Ltd in their onshore operational area. For over fifteen years now, Chevron Management, has refused to employ any of our indigenes, as permanent or contractor staff, as this unpalatable action negate the Nigeria Local Content laws of Federal Republic of Nigeria, also against the oil and gas company cooperate social responsibilities.

 

“Sir on the 03/05/2023, we carry out a peaceful protest to Chevron Nig Ltd, Warri office, on that day, CNL promised to invite the representatives of Itsekiri Employment and Empowerment Council (IEEC), Itsekiri Regional Development Committee ( IRDC) and Chevron Nig. Ltd, management on a stipulated date, 10/05/2024 to address the high rate of unemployment in the host communities, but up till now, CNL did not call or invite us, all our effort to reach CNL to call for peaceful dialogue/meeting proved abortive, all their promises to resolve the matter was a mirage.

 

“Sir, it will interest you to know that, Escravos Tank Farm, Escravos Gas To Liquid ( EGTL), Abiteye Flow Station, Dibi Flow Station, Olero Flow Station, Utonana Flow Station, Makaraba Flow Station, Chevron Nigeria Ltd, employ over 3,000 workers daily, leaving us, the host communities that lay the golden eggs to suffer, we are tired of swimming in the pool of joblessness and poverty.

 

“We are writing to let you know sir, that we will embark on another peaceful protest, because that's the only avenue we draw the attention of Chevron Management.

 

 

 

“Our Demands, is as follow;

 

1. Twenty five (25) Chevron permanent staff position yearly.

 

2. Thirty (30) contract staff operations and maintenance technician yearly.

 

3. Fifty (50%) percent of mobilized indigene in the recent concluded EGTL TAM should be retained.

 

4. Five (5) crane operators yearly

 

5. Ten(10) fire wash yearly.

 

6. Fifteen (15) riggers yearly.

 

7.60% Percent of JAD catering staff.

 

8.60% Percent of ENS catering staff.

 

9. One (1) Community Liaison Officer and one Chief Security Officer for JAD catering.

 

10. Five (5) Community Liaison Officer and five Chief Security Officer for ENS catering.

 

11. Five (5) Community Liaison Officer and five Chief Security Officer for OMS Ogor onshore supply vessel.

 

12. Ten (10) Safety Inspectors yearly.

 

13. Twenty (20) MEA and one CLO, one SO from Sea Truck Nigeria Limited and one MEA, one CLO and one CSO from all the marine contractor in your operations.

 

14. One (1) Safety Officer, one houseboat technician from all the houseboat contractors.

 

15. Two hundred (200) University scholarships.

 

16. Two hundred (200) secondary school scholarships.

 

17. PFSP workers should be increased.

 

18. Fifteen (15) welders yearly.

 

19. Fifteen (15) pipe filters yearly.

 

20. 60% of dredging workforce, 1 (ONE) CLO, 1 CSO (Skill and Unskilled) whenever there is any dredging operation

 

21. 60% of drilling workforce, 1 (ONE) CLO, 1 CSO (Skill and Unskilled) whenever there is drilling operation

 

22. 60% construction workforce, 1 (ONE) CLO, 1 CSO (Skill and Unskilled) whenever there is construction / repair.

 

23. 60% of all Chevron contractors working in tank farm, ETGL, Swamp location and 2 CLO and 2 Chief Security for each Your contractor.

 

24. 50% of our indigene that were mobilized for the EGTL Turn around job.

 

 

“We assure you that the protest shall be peaceful, without any form of vandalism or violence, this notification also serve as your invitation to witness the protest.”


 Meanwhile, the protest has commenced, Chevron offices are locked. No crew change today.
