Soldiers deployed to the accident and emergency gate of Central Hospital Warri are allegedly demanding N500 from each family that deposits corpse at the hospital mortuary before they are allowed to carry such corpse past the gate for burial, an eye witness recently hinted Fresh Angle.
The witness who prefers anonymity alleged that the soldiers use some civilians to carry out their demand and refusal to pay often result to intimidation and hot exchanges between the soldiers and owners of the corpses at the mortuary site.
Fresh Angle could not however reach the hospital authorities as at press time to ascertain if they have any knowledge of the allegation, but a member of one of the families that carried corpse from the mortuary Saturday August 25 called on authorities of the hospital to stop the ugly development, which he described “as a shameful trend emanating from the soldiers”.
The demands of soldiers and other security agents attached to strategic locations across the country, particularly in Delta State in recent times have assumed a worrying dimension. Only recently, the contractor handling Delta State government sponsored Ogheye Floating Market in Warri North Local government area, Mr. Phillip Awani alleged that soldiers deployed to the community asked him to pay N500, 000.00 monthly as security before he can continue work on the project site.
There have been reported cases of extortion of money from transporters by some policemen in major roads across the country, a situation which led to the dismantling of check points by the new Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar.
