Erudite Academic and Vice Chancellor of Dominican University Ibadan, DUI, Prof. Jacinta Opara, has identified underfunding, limited access to resources and the brain drain of talented scholars to more developed regions, as challenges confronting the attainment of sustainable higher education in Africa.
Prof. Opara, who noted that the future of sustainable development in Africa hinges on the ability to build robust research capacities and foster innovations that meet the continent’s unique needs, stated that research and innovation, are essential drivers of progress and development.
Fresh Angle International can report that she spoke Friday October 25, during the International Conference on Research and Sustainable Development at Bungoma National Polytechnic, Bungoma in Kenya.
Whilst stating that Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) play critical role in harnessing tools to solve societal challenges, Prof. Opara, asserted: “The higher education sector must take centre stage in this transformation, positioning itself as a hub for research, creativity, and problem- solving.”
According to her: “One of the critical aspects of building research capacity in Africa is aligning research with the continent’s development priorities. Areas such as healthcare, climate change, agriculture, renewable energy, and technology innovation should be at the forefront of research agendas in African universities.
“It is time for African tertiary institutions, governments, and development partners to prioritize research and innovation as pillars of sustainable higher education.”
