The Member representing Urhobo ethnic nationality on the Board of Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, Hon. Oghenekaro Jonathan Goru has commended the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori for the ongoing massive intervention on flood control measures by DESOPADEC in conjunction with the Ministry of Environment in the Commission’s mandate areas.
Goru gave the commendation Tuesday August 12, while addressing the media after his inspection of the ongoing de-silting of drainages at Orhunworun in Udu Local Government Area.
"I want to thank His Excellency Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori for the total support for DESOPADEC on the ongoing intervention exercise across the Commission’s mandate areas. This proactive initiative is very critical to ameliorating the plight of residents in the flood prone areas. Work is going on in all the critical places in the Commission’s mandate areas due to the benevolence of the Renewed Hope for the MORE agenda of His Excellency," he said.
Speaking further, he said the Orhunworun road drainage whose discharge points are close to the railway line was totally silted, making the water to flow back to the community.
"We have discovered that the blocked drainage has led to the back flow of the water to nearby buildings. Secondly it has been long since the drainage was evacuated so the only solution is to open the drainage and evacuate the sand and debris to allow for free flow of water through the channel," he said.
Other residents who spoke with DESOPADEC Media commended the Governor and the Commission for the exercise, noting that it will go a long way in ameliorating the plight of residents in the area.
Chief Mrs. Anne Ojiyovwi also affirmed that the exercise was the first of its kind by the Government agencies in a very long time in the area.
"This is the first time the Government has mobilized people to come and do a thorough job here. We have just been doing the little we can during environmental sanitation exercises. I thank DESOPADEC for this initiative and may God bless our Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori," she said.
Others who responded also commended DESOPADEC for the timely intervention, hoping that the exercise will definitely alleviate the plight of the residents in the area.
