Gunmen suspected to be bandits have killed one person and abducted three passengers travelling in an 18-seater bus along the Okene-Lokoja highway.
Our Kogi State Correspondent, reports that the incident occurred on Saturday around 3:00 p.m. at Aku village in Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State.
Eyewitnesses said the Toyota bus, with registration number Benue DAP 325 LG, was in transit when the gunmen suddenly blocked the road and forced the driver to stop.
Controller-General of the Kogi State Vigilante Service (KSVS), Rtd. Ibrahim Omeiza Sani, who confirmed the attack, said his men quickly engaged the kidnappers in a gun duel and are currently on their trail to rescue the abducted victims.
Spokesperson of the Vigilante Service, Idris Abubakar, in a statement, said:
“On 6th September, 2025, between 1500 and 1515 hours, armed men suspected to be Fulani bandits in military camouflage attacked an 18-seater Toyota bus at Aku village along Okene-Lokoja Federal Highway.
“In a swift response, the KSVS Osara Command, supported by six brave local hunters, engaged the kidnappers in a fierce gun battle. Although the attackers escaped into the forest with three kidnapped passengers, the bus driver and three others were rescued.”
Abubakar confirmed that a bystander hit by a stray bullet died during the incident.
The Vigilante Service said it is working with other security agencies to track down the kidnappers and ensure the safe release of the abducted victims.
Sani commended the gallantry of his men and the hunters, praising Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for prioritizing security in the state. He also lauded State Security Adviser, Rtd. Cdr. Jerry Omodara, for his continued support.
He further directed vigilante personnel to intensify efforts to flush out criminal elements from the state and urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements to security agencies.
