Protest: Controversy as Women group asks Chevron to negotiate with Warri Monarch

Fresh twist has emerged regarding the ongoing protest in Ugborodo, against Chevron Nigeria Limited and its JV Partner, as a group, Voice of Warri Kingdom Women Initiative, has called on the management of Chevron Nigeria Limited, to by-pass the protesters and negotiate with the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III.

President, Voice of Warri Kingdom Women Initiative, Mrs. Vivian Mene, who made the demand in Warri, Tuesday December 16, while leading members of the group on a peaceful protest, said they had given a 90-day ultimatum before the protest broke out Monday December 15 at Chevron EGTL Facility in Ugborodo, Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State.

The group, called on Chevron Nigeria Limited to operate full open camp access for people of the host communities, fair empowerment opportunities (quality assurance jobs professional slot) as well as transparent allocation of contracts to Ugborodo people, “not only to some set of people for the pass 20 years.”

They also demanded empowerment, training, and development programmes for Ugborodo people and end to monopolizing access or hijacking Ugborodo people’s benefits.

“To Our Leaders That Have Been Representing Us All These Years, They Have Failed In This Area, Go And Meet Our King, Ogiame Atuwase III.

“We Will Not Be Intimidated out of our Ancestral Land. Don't Negotiate with the ongoing Protesters”, Voice of Warri Kingdom Women Initiative, insisted.
