The Itsekiri National Youth Council, INYC, has expressed shock and angst over the controversial murder of SOS Commander, Kunu Liberty in Sapele, Delta State, Wednesday January 28, saying the circumstances surrounding the death of Liberty, after he was reportedly invited by the Police DPO in Sapele, suggest extrajudicial killing.
The apex Itsekiri youth body, in an electronic statement made available to newsmen in Warri, Thursday January 29, opined that insinuation that the deceased vigilante commander, may have died as a result of exchange of gun fire between the Police and members of SOS in a hideout, leaves much to be desired “because there has been no other report or speculation of any other fatality, arrest, nor injuries resulting from the touted crossfire.”
President of Itsekiri National Youth Council, Comr. Appearance Afejuku, in the statement, asserted that while the Council, would support the Police and other security agencies to deal decisively with all forms of criminality, it is vehemently opposed to extrajudicial killings, “particularly murder of Itsekiri indigenes.”
The Itsekiri youth leader, averred that incidences of murder of Itsekiri Youths, linked to security agencies, were becoming recurring decimal.
According to him, the reported murder of another vigilante, Dele Ogunbayo, by ‘Men dressed in Military uniform’, Thursday September 18, 2025, at his house in the Pessu area of Warri, remained a sore taste, “without any meaningful headway, on how the killers will be apprehended and made to face the law. Only for we to wake up this morning, Thursday January 29, to hear of the cold-blooded murder of Liberty.”
INYC, called on the Inspector-General of Police, to immediately institute a high-powered investigative team, to unravel those responsible for the death of the Itsekiri-born SOS commander, Kunu Liberty.
