Chevron wants to drop Itsekiris, others over claims of inadequate accommodation – Itsekiri women allege

Itsekiri Women group, Voice of Warri Kingdom Women Initiative, has raised alarm over alleged move by Chevron Nigeria Limited, CNL, to drop some Itsekiris, Ijaws and Urhobos working in the company’s construction department, over lack/inadequate accommodation.

President of Voice of Warri Kingdom Women Initiative, Mrs. Vivian Mene, who led members of the group in a protest Thursday February 12, claimed that the affected workers are in mechanic, civil, electrical, scald folding and welding sections in Chevron’s onshore and offshore operations.

According to her, the oil and gas major, is telling the affected Deltans to go home and return when accommodation is available for them.

While describing the purported move as a format to drop the workers and replace them with people who are not from the host communities, Mrs. Mene, who appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to wade into the issue, stated: “Our brothers are eating from hand to mouth, their salary is not even enough. We are agitating that their salary should be increased, now you want to send them back home, you want to send them to slavery, Voice of Warri Kingdom Women say no to it.

“When the period of sit at home is over, Chevron bosses will not call our people back, they will now do fresh employment for their people, who are not indigenes. Our people need open camp policy, to solve the accommodations problem.

“Chevron can’t be in our land making profit, while sons and daughters of the land are suffering. No Itsekiri, Ijaw and Urhobo working there, should be dropped. Enough is enough. We will shutdown all the flowstation. Chevron in Lagos should have a rethink.”
