Dr. ( Mrs.) Fidelia Ighrakpata

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Oborevwori, has approved the appointment of Dr. (Mrs.) Fidelia Chukwudumebi Ighrakpata as the new Provost of College of Education, Warri, COEWA.

According to a statement sighted Sunday May 10 on the official Facebook page of COEWA, her appointment followed an outstanding performance at the recently concluded Provost selection interview conducted earlier this week. Among all contenders for the exalted office, Dr. Ighrakpata distinguished herself by emerging with the highest score, leading to her recommendation by the College Council, and subsequent approval by the Executive Governor.

Dr. Ighrakpata’s emergence is widely regarded as a reward for years of hard work, discipline, competence, dedication, and exemplary service to the institution.

She is a seasoned administrator and an accomplished academic. She has served the College in several strategic capacities with remarkable distinction.

Notably, she worked closely with former Provost, Prof. Mary Olire Edema and the current Provost, Dr. Dickson Oyovwi, as Deputy Provost, bringing to bear a wealth of administrative experience and institutional knowledge.

Dr. Ighrakpata is expected to officially assume office in June, 2026, following the formal handover by the incumbent Provost.

A trailblazer in many respects, Dr. Ighrakpata was the first female Head of the College ICT Centre and has occupied numerous leadership positions, including Head of Department, Chairman of several adhoc Committees, and Chairman of the Planning Committees for the College’s 20th and 21st Convocation Ceremonies.

Her appointment also carries deep historical and symbolic significance. She is the daughter of Prof. Alfred Chukwudi Unomah, the College’s third substantive Provost, who served from 1995 to 2002. Prof. Unomah is widely celebrated for relocating the institution to its permanent site in 1996, a landmark achievement immortalized through the naming of the College Main Auditorium after him.

In what many have described as a remarkable legacy moment, Dr. Ighrakpata will assume office exactly 24 years after her father’s tenure as Provost.

She is a renowned Physicist and Geophysicist. Dr. Ighrakpata holds a B.Sc in Applied Physics and an M.Sc in Exploration Geophysics from University of Benin, a PGDE from Delta State University, and a Ph.D in Physics/Geophysics from Ambrose Alli University.

She is widely admired for her intelligence, humility, elegance, diligence, and administrative strength. Dr. Ighrakpata is expected to usher in a new era of innovation, academic excellence, discipline, and transformational leadership in the College.

Indeed, with this appointment, the Executive Governor of Delta State has demonstrated a clear commitment to placing competence, experience, and excellence at the forefront of educational leadership, truly putting a square peg in a square hole.

The College Community congratulated Dr. (Mrs.) Fidelia C. Ighrakpata on this well deserved appointment and wishes her a successful and impactful tenure.
