Delta, 11 other states face moderate flash flood  in the next 10 days


Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Ebonyi, Abia, Ondo, Kogi, Plateau, Zamfara, Kaduna, Borno and Sokoto States, face moderate flash flood risk between Saturday August 1 and Monday August 10, the Nigeria Meteorological Agency, NiMET, has alerted.

 

The Agency, in an advisory released Saturday August 1 on its X handle, noted that the outlook, was based on anticipated rainfall intensity, antecedent soil moisture, terrain characteristics and drainage capacity.

 

NiMET, also warned that Niger, Taraba, Adamawa, Nasarawa, Benue, Edo, Cross River and Akwa - Ibom States as well as the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, may experience high flash flood risk.

 

The Agency, cautioned Nigerians against walking or driving through flooded roads, bridges or drainage channels, stressing the need to keep drains, culverts and waterways free of refuse, to ensure the free flow of water.

 

The advisory, urged farmers to improve farm drainage and move machinery, harvested produce and livestock away from flood prone areas, noting that early preparedness and timely action, remain essential in reducing the impacts of flash flooding.
