Nigeria at 66: Citizens Reflect on Nation’s Journey, Challenges

As Nigeria marks 66 years of independence, the milestone is not just a number but a reflection of the nation’s journey through decades of achievements, challenges and resilience.

Since gaining independence, Nigeria has recorded progress in education, technology, entertainment, sports and entrepreneurship, with its citizens making notable contributions both nationally and internationally. Yet, persistent economic, security and governance concerns continue to shape public conversations about the country’s development.

Speaking on the state of the nation, Ovighowara Emmanuel Odivwri identified hunger and insecurity as major challenges confronting Nigerians. He noted that insecurity has affected lives and livelihoods, while rising food prices and economic hardship have made it increasingly difficult for many families to afford basic necessities.

On the country’s political development, Otali Blessing Oluchukwu expressed concern over what he described as persistent weaknesses in Nigeria’s governance and political structure. He also raised concerns about the electoral process and citizens’ ability to freely determine their leaders, stressing the need for greater accountability and increased civic participation, particularly among young Nigerians.

Oluchukwu further pointed to Nigeria’s abundant natural resources, including crude oil and coal, saying effective leadership and responsible management of these resources are essential to translating the country’s potential into meaningful development.

Looking towards the 70th Independence Anniversary, Avwiri Fega Gordon said he would like to see a more developed Nigeria, characterised by advanced technology, improved infrastructure, good roads and better educational facilities.

Gordon also called for greater employment opportunities for youths and other Nigerians, saying such opportunities would improve living conditions and put smiles on the faces of people across the country.

While challenges remain, Nigeria’s resilience, creativity, diversity and human potential continue to provide a foundation for progress. The 66th Independence Anniversary therefore offers an opportunity for reflection on the nation’s achievements and a renewed commitment to building a more secure, prosperous and inclusive society.

Happy 66th Independence Anniversary to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
