The exit of Chelsea’s old brigades led by Ivorian captain, Didier Drogba after winning the last EUFA Champions league marks the end of an old era and the beginning of a new phase in the club’s history. The import is that the current European Champion is in a building process, this much was revealed during the club’s pre season preparation which recorded poor showings in friendly matches and as such funny for most of its fans who were thrilled by its exciting start to the new season to think that Chelsea will win the 2012/2013 English Premier League, EPL.
Despite its acquisition of exciting young talents like Oscar, Victor Moses, Eden Hazard, Marko Marin and some of the considerable oldies like Ramires, Juan Mata, David Luiz and the on-loan Belgian International, Romelu Lukaka, Chelsea’s rebuilding process, change in playing style and obvious shortcomings in certain departments give Manchester United, a great chance of winning the current EPL, considering its experience and strategic world class additions.
As it stands, Chelsea does not have a world class striker, no thanks to Fernando Torres’s dip in form and lack of confidence in front of goal. The club’s choice of David Luiz as a preferred defensive pair with club Captain, John Terry or Gary Cahill is another shaky department in Chelsea’s quest for laurels this season. An obvious blunder in Chelsea’s title chase is its reliance on Daniel Sturridge as second striker instead of the on-loan Romelu Lukaku who appears a natural replacement for Didier Drogba, considering his strength, pace, technique and skill.
The club’s new expansive and entertaining approach which leaves protection of its rear guard on John Obi Mikel and Brazilian born attack minded midfielder, Ramires is another area, Chelsea’s management must look into critically, with a view to moving David Luiz as an extra man in the midfield as worthy cover up. Luiz’s style of play speaks of a natural defensive midfielder, rather than a centre half.
If truly Roberto Di Matteo and his backroom staff intends to win trophies in England and Europe this season, they should go for an in-form world class striker in mould of Edinson Cavani or Radamel Falcao García of Athletico Madrid and recall Lukaku who is on loan at West Brom. They should also scout for a world class defensive midfielder in the mould of Claude Makalele or recall Michael Essien from Real Madrid should he stay injury free by January transfer window.
