A soldier was on Sunday September 18, 2011 shot deadby armed robbers at river road, Ekpan in Uvwie local government area of DeltaState at about 11pm, Fresh Angle can exclusively report.
An eye witness said the soldier who was on guard drunkhimself to stupor and was allegedly having sex surfeit with a girl inside theirmakeshift shanty while his colleagues excused him. The witness further allegedthat the act has been the habit of the soldiers since their posting to thearea. However, as soon as news filtered in that armed robbers were operating inthe area, the soldier abandoned his sex pleasure to show his gallantry by goingstraight into the compound in which the operation was taking place withoutbeing fully armed. In the process, he was shot dead by a member of the robberygang. As soon as the news got to his colleagues, they staged a reprisalattack and in the process, a member of the bandits was shot dead.
The incident was immediately reported to the NigerianPolice Station in Ekpan and the body of the deceased robber was handed over tothem, while the remains of the deceased soldier had been deposited in anundisclosed mortuary.
When Fresh Angle visited the NPF Ekpan,an Officer who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed the incident, addingthat the soldier died as a result of indiscipline. Efforts to speak with thesoldiers on duty were unsuccessful as none of them was around as at press time.
