IRC moves against extinction of Itsekiri Language

The Itsekiri Resource Centre, IRC, a body powered by the Traditional Prime Minister (Ologbotsere) of Warri Kingdom, Chief Ayirimi Emami has begun a summer class for the learning of Itsekiri Language as part of efforts to save the language from extinction.

The summer class which began Monday August 13 and expected to be rounded off Friday August 31, holds 9am to 1pm on week days at Ode-Itsekiri, Ubeji and Ikenbuwa Primary School, Ajamimogha in Warri.

Initiator of itsekiri Resource Centre, Chief Ayirimi Emami who addressed newsmen at Ode-Itsekiri in Warri South Local Government Area, Wednesday August 15 while monitoring the programme, noted that one of his pet projects is to promote the learning and speaking of Itsekiri Language, particularly against the backdrop of the dominance of English Language in modern day communication.

While congratulating the Chairman of IRC, Hon. David A.O. Johnson on his birthday Wednesday August 15, Chief Emami commended Chief Thomas Ereyitomi as well as Mr. Alex Eyengho for supporting the Itsekiri summer class and challenged political office holders of Itsekiri extraction to invest their resources in the promotion of Itsekiri Language and culture.

One of the teachers engaged for the Itsekiri summer class, Tessy Ikomi stated that the learning ability of the pupils and students have been encouraging.

Investigation revealed that no fewer than 60 pupils and students are taking part in each of the three centres where the summer class is taking place.
