NPC decries low vital registration

The National Population Commission, NPC, has decried the low vital registration by residents in Bomadi local government area, saying it is not encouraging.

The Comptroller of the commission in Bomadi local government area, Mr. Oyazimor Tam, who stated this in a chat with newsmen in Bomadi, advised residents to come forward and register their births and deaths with the commission.

While underscoring the importance of the official registration of births and deaths, marriages, divorces and migration, Mr. Tam explained that vital registration is a post census exercise towards supplementing the demographic data of the country, which according to him is a pre-requisite for future projection of the population as well as national planning.

The Comptroller, who highlighted some benefits from birth certificate, noted that it secures ones civic rights such as school enrolment, voting right, employment amongst others, just as he opined that “poor attitude of residents towards vital registration can mar population projection negatively and distort data for national planning”. He enjoined Bomadi residents to always register their births and deaths regularly.

He however stated that the commission is faced with some challenges in view of the terrain as mostly riverine, just as he was quick to observe that the riverine nature poses transportation difficulties to the people living in the creeks to come out for registration. The Comptroller therefore called for additional substations and manpower in the LGA to effectively reach out to people living in the creeks.
